7th Heaven for 74 By Matt Waters

Wayne Goodison and Paul Bowyer’s men left it late to beat promotion rivals Longridge Town which sees them go 7 points clear at the top of the North West Counties with two games in hand on Rylands.
After a 21-day break from league action, everyone knew that Tuesday nights clash with promotion rivals Longridge Town was going to be a thriller, and it was exactly that. A game that saw a red card, a missed penalty and 2 stoppage time goals for the greens over the line to claim all three points in a dramatic comeback victory.

The game started slow with not many clear-cut chances for either side with the possession being lost in the middle of the pitch for both sides, but it was Longridge who broke the deadlock. After a flurry of half chances inside the penalty area, Tom Ince pounced on a deflection from Matt Woolley inside the penalty area and stroked the ball home after 20 minutes to put the visitors ahead at Townfield.
Just before the half hour mark, things went from bad to worse for 1874. A goal kick from Tony Aghayere appeared to strike the arm of Rick Seear and he was resultantly brought down by Aghayere to hand Longridge a controversial penalty moments after opening the scoring. However, Tony redeemed himself by making a superb penalty save, diving brilliantly to his left to deny Longridge doubling their lead.

The remainder of the half saw 74 really grow into the game with a few chances from Scott McGowan and Jake Parker nearly finding the net. However just before the break, it was the Captain Matt Woolley who levelled the scoring at Townfield.

Five minutes after the restart Longridge put themselves back Infront. A flicked header by Rhys Turner evaded the jump from Lee Jackson and played in Rick Seear who didn’t let his penalty miss phase him as he slotted home to give Longridge the lead once more.

After Town retook the lead, it was one-way traffic from here as 1874 piled on the pressure as they have done many times this season from losing positions. After an effort from Jake Parker went narrowly wide, 74 were given a boost when Daniel Wilkinson was sent off for a poorly timed tackle on Taylor Kennerley and 1874 knew they had to make the man advantage count.

1874 nearly levelled 20 minutes from time but the referee deemed the header from Lee Jackson impeded on the Longridge keeper who dropped the ball onto the path of Jackson. However, the greens kept pushing on and finally in the 89th minute they got their equaliser. A superb move and linkup play between Harry Cain and Jake Parker saw Jack Tinning finish calmly into the net to score a much-deserved goal after all the second half possession.

In the 95th minute however, 1874 managed to secure a superb comeback against all the odds. Just like away at Skelmersdale, they punished another side for their ‘game management.’ A corner swung into the box bounced around awkwardly until Scott McGowan managed to head the ball over the line sending 1874 into jubilation with a last gasp goal securing victory in the dying moments of the tie.
