TONY KEEPS POINTS SAFE FOR 74

BY GARRY CLARKE

1874 Northwich maintained their position on top of the NWCFL Premier Division table beating Bootle 2-0 at Townfield.

A goal in each half secured the points for 1874, but it would have been a much different story without a man of the match display from goalkeeper Tony Aghayere, who confidentially dealt with everything thrown at him.

The 1874 custodian made several outstanding saves starting in the 8th minute with an impressive double save. John Connolly tested Aghayere with a shot from the edge of the area which he did well to save. He quickly regained his feet to turn Cameron Dalton’s follow up attempt round the post.

Bootle had started the better of the two teams. Mike Koral blocked a goal bound Connor Millington shot and Michael Carberry fired a long range shot over the bar before 1874 started to come more into the game forcing a series of corners.

Matt Woolley met a corner with a header at the near post which flew across the face of goal and wide of the far post, while Lee Knight blazed a shot over the bar and was also denied by a good save by Bootle goalkeeper Ryan Jones.

1874 were reduced temporarily to ten men mid way through the first half when Matt Russell became the first 1874 player to be dispatched to the sin bin. 1874 re organized their back line to keep their visitors at bay.

Russell made an immediate impact on his return to action, playing a long ball downfield which Bootle defender Kieran Halligan could only direct into the path of Jake Parker. Cutting inside Parker delivered a curling shot from outside the area just of off Jones’ reach to break the deadlock in the 43rd minute.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first half with Bootle in the ascendancy. In the opening minutes Aghayere tipped a dipping long range Nillington shot around the post and also saved well to keep out a Carl Peers shot.

1874 soon regained control of the game with Knight drawing a fine save from Jones. McGowan doubled 1874’s advantage in the 65th minute converting from the penalty shot after he had been tripped by Halligan.

1874 dominated the closing stages of the game going close to adding to their tally several times. Parker just cleared the bar with a shot from outside the area, Taylor Kennerley flashed a shot across the face of goal, McGowan’s chip shot landed on the roof of the net and Jones saved bravely at the feet of Kennerley.
