Earlier this week, we announced the signing of former player Stuart Wellstead ahead of this weekend home tie verses Litherland REMCYA. At training this week, Media Officer Matt Waters caught up with Stu to discuss the move. After making 127 appearances first time around, Wellstead told me that after talking to Paul Bowyer this week, it became clear there is a key role to play in the side. He said, “After talking to him (Paul Bowyer), it was evident that I have a lot to offer, in terms of the experience I can bring to the squad. I also want to learn for the next stages of my career and with Wayne being a top draw manager and coach, I feel like I can learn a lot from him in preparation for my next steps.”With Stuart winning the North West Counties Premier Division with Runcorn Linnets, he told me can help the side maintain a “relentless” mindset. He added, “This season there is more competition than ever so it’s all about maintaining that relentless mindset to keep ourselves where we are. The lads have been doing that really well whilst I haven’t been here but as the season goes on, I feel I can add to this to keep everyone focussed.”Another area where Wellstead believes he can make an impact is through our game management. He commented, “From my time at Runcorn I know first hand at times what it’s like when you’re under the cosh and everyone around you wants to beat you. It’s a great position to be in but you have to manage it correctly and its not always about how pretty the football is. At any level you see champions grind out results and its that experience I can bring to the side.”Everyone at 1874 is delighted to see Stuart back in the 1874 shirt and you can see him make his second debut for the club weekend against Litherland REMCYA.
