Captain’s Column: Northwich Victoria (A)

1874 club captain Matty Fenton has urged ’74 supporters to turn up in their numbers, as The Greens travel to Winsford to face Northwich Victoria this afternoon.

1874 head into the game with two wins in two, and Fenton is keen for the team to continue to push on in the league, but warned against complacency in the early stages of the season.

“Of course we want to continue the 100% record but it’s important to recognise we’re only 2 games in and this is going to be a long season.”

“The lads and the management staff are taking it game by game and we’ll see what the outcome is at the end of April. If we start looking ahead of ourselves that’s where we can quickly lose focus.”

After being knocked out of the FA Vase on Saturday afternoon, Fenton spoke of the importance of immediately bouncing back on Monday.

“Obviously we’re disappointed with the defeat on Saturday but the dressing room is still really close together and we all have put that behind us now and move onto today.”

“We know we’re capable of putting much stronger performances together and there’s no better game than a local derby to do that in.”

“The changing room knows the importance of the game today. We had a chat after Wakefield and we’re all on the same page about what this means to our fans.”

“I never doubt the lad’s work ethic on the pitch but I’m sure you’ll see that little extra put in from all of us today.”

“The game today is clearly massive for the town, but as players we need to enter the pitch with a clear mind and focus on our performance as a team.”

“Bring those loud and proud voices with you this afternoon and be our 12th man. CMON 74!”
