1874 TURN ON A STYLISH DISPLAY

1874 NORTHWICH   5    V    0     AFC BLACKPOOL
MACRON CUP SECOND ROUND – SATURDAY 10TH NOVEMBER

In many ways it was quite important that 1874 recorded a comprehensive win on Saturday to not only make progress in this competition, but also to do it with some style and entertaining football to please their supporters and management alike. That they did so even without several players that were unavailable for various reasons was an added bonus.

1874 took the game to their opponents straight from the kick off but it was just past the quarter hour mark when the first real chance of the game was created. Callum Gardner advanced quickly down the right flank before cutting inside to hit a good shot that was well saved by the visiting keeper.

However, 1874 didn’t have to wait too much longer before taking a deserved lead as in the 21st minute Gardner worked well on the flank again before playing an excellent well weighted pass into the path of Sam Hare who moved on a few strides before beating the keeper with a good strike. The second goal of the game soon followed when McGowan netted with ease past the advancing keeper and it was soon to be 3-0 within the opening half hour when McGowan netted his second in the 28th minute with Woolley and McGowan involved in the build up.

HT 3-0

After the interval the visitors did try hard to get back into the game but found it difficult to break down a solid 1874 back line and goalkeeper Coates who despite suffering a back injury bravely continued.

With the tie effectively “won” the pace of the game slowed a little although 1874 did continue to add more goals and as the visitors noticeably tired 1874 did add two more goals.

First of all McGowan completed his hat trick with a cool finish in the 82nd minute and the final goal was scored by Gardner who had worked hard all through the game and he thoroughly deserved to be on the score sheet as his side finished the game with an impressive 5-0 win and in doing so earned a trip to Abbey Hey in the next round on Saturday 10th December
