Recap
1874 NORTHWICH 0-3 ASHTON ATHLETIC
HSL PREMIER 2nd October 2018
1874 were hoping for a third win on the bounce when they met Ashton Athletic who themselves were desperate for a first league win to start their much needed run to move from the foot of the table but in the end the visitors ran out as deserved comfortable winners.
However, it could have been so different had 1874 taken one of a few chances that they created before Ashton opened the scoring.Either side of the half hour mark 1874 had two good chances when firstly Kennerley worked well on the left flank before crossing to McGowan but the striker was thwarted by some last ditch defending and then Kennerley himself was presented with a chance by Connor’s good work but again the efforts was easily averted.
Whilst 1874 continued to press forward at every opportunity the Ashton side always looked dangerous on the break and as such the 1874 backline were kept busy and it was no real surprise when Ashton took the lead in the 42nd minute when their captain Luke Holden was on hand to meet a cross from the left with a bullet header that flew in to the top corner giving Coates no chance to make a save.
After the interval 1874 tried to get on level terms but in reality they didn’t threaten the visitors back line too much and in the 69th minute Ashton’s lead was increased by their striker Marcus Cusani and just six minutes later the contest was over as Joshua Nicholson added a third goal.1874 should have scored a consolation goal really in the last few minutes when their best chance fell to substitute Kyle Riley but his header went narrowly wide
1874: Coates; Tucker; Russell; Pritchard; Thomas; Clayton; Connor; Irlam; McGowan; Waite-Jackson & Kennereley
