MCGOWAN’S STRIKE WINS IT AGAIN FOR 74
BY GARRY CLARKE

1874 NORTHWICH 2-1 BOOTLE                     HSL PREMIER              29TH SEPTEMBER 2018

Scoring his 70th goal for the club Scott McGowan was once again 1874 Northwich’s match winner netting the winning goal in the 79th to secure his team the three points in a 2-1 won against Bootle at St Luke’s Barton Stadium.

1874 dominated the game with the visitors rarely threatening the home goal. In the first half Elliot Nevitt fired a shot over the bar and Stephen Milne had a shot saved by Matt Green, while 1874’s centre back pairing of Danny Thomas and Jack Pritchard kept the visitors at bay on the other occasions when they ventured forward.

Taylor Kennerley had a shot blocked by the legs of the Bootle goalkeeper Jack McGoven, who pulled off a top class save to beat away a Matt Russell volley,  while twice saving from Joe Woolley. Kazim Waite-Jackson, Lucas Weir and Jack Irlam were all off target with attempts and McGowan saw a goal bound shot blocked by a desperate defender in a goalmouth scramble.

1874 broke the deadlock in the 37th minute. Cutting in from the right wing, Kennerley pass infield to Waite-Jackson, his shot from outside the area was fumbled by McGoven allowing the following up Kennerley to score from close range.

Bootle drew level three minutes into the second half. Milne’s cross from the right wing found Andrew Gillespie who turned the ball past Green from six yards.

Two minutes later Waite-Jackson slipped the ball into the path of Kennerley whose shot beat McGoven but not the covering Joel Powell who cleared the ball off the line. McGovern did well to take a dangerous Woolley cross from under his cross bar as 1874 battled to reassert their dominance. Another Woolley centre set up Waite-Jackson, but he sliced his shot wide.

With the game seemingly heading towards a draw McGowan popped up to strike the decisive blow to secure 1874’s second successive victory.

Kennerley powered his way the Bootle rearguard, delivering a cut back from the dead ball line he found McGowan lurking at the far post to tap the ball home.
