Recap

Most of the strong 1874 supporter base had been very patient in the opening weeks of the 2018/2019 season but somewhat inevitably there had been a small number who had vented their feelings of disappointment and to some this was disappointing but after finally registering their first win of the season on Tuesday evening it is hoped that this will be the kick start of another successful and memorable season for 1874.

To the supporters little was known about the opposition as this was the first meeting between the two sides but, as it has already been proved this season, there doesn’t appear to be any poor sides in this division our Tuesday’s visitors were a good example of how tough this league is going to be this season.
1874 were keen to welcome back to their starting lining up Scott McGowan and it has to be said that was Scotty was well pleased to back himself!

In their last game at Squires Gate, 1874 had been beaten and also had their custodian sent off after he had brought down a home forward in the area and subsequently been sent off meaning that he received a suspension and so he was unavailable for this game. The Managers reacted quickly and drafted James Coates in to the squad and Coates settled in admirably as he organized his defenders around, commanded his area and was constantly heard to be shouting out directions.
The visitors were a busy workmanlike side that liked to move the ball out of defence quickly as they constantly tried to go forward.

The first goal was always going to be crucial and so it proved as in the 19th minute McGowan moved on to a pass from Matty Russell, got the better of a defender and calmly controlled the ball before lofting the ball over the keeper and into the net much to the delight of his team matesScotty One Nil and the home supporters

A few minutes later and supporters thought that McGowan had added a second goal but the assistant’s raised flag stopped any further celebrations!

The visitors tried to get back on level terms and whilst they did have a fair percentage of possession they didn’t really threaten the 1874 back line.

1874 also created chances but couldn’t quite find the target as Joe Woolley and Taylor Kennerley had opportunities but saw them easily defended whilst a “well-worked” corner routine ended with McGowan’s effort being instinctively saved by the keeper with his boot.
