BY GARRY CLARKE
1874 NORTHWICH 5-0 MAINE ROAD HSL PREMIER 23RD DECEMBER 2017
Having seen their previous four games fall foul of the great British weather, 1874 Northwich were relieved when the St Luke’s Barton Stadium pitch survived a late inspection, and they responded in style.
1874 extended their winning run, in all competitions, to a club record nine consecutive games by hitting five goals past a struggling Maine Road as they started their climb up the HSL Premier League table.
1874 enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, but had to rely on a timely interception from Ryan Mitchell in the 10th minute to thwart a Maine Road breakaway before Scott McGowan opened the scoring from the penalty spot two minutes later.
McGowan converted his 5th spot kick of the season to register his 18th goal of the season by sending the keeper the wrong way after Taylor Kennerley was clumsily bundled over in the area by Dave Brown.
McGowan had the ball in the net eight minutes later when a Paul Connor through ball found him all alone in the penalty area, but he was flagged offside.
1874 continued to press forward going close to scoring on several occasions. Kennerley dragged a shot across the face of goal, Jake Parker guided a header narrowly wide while Road keeper Ryan Livesey saved well to keep out a Mark Jones header and a Sam Hind shot.
Livesey was unable to prevent Jones from doubling 1874’s advantage in the 43rd minute. Mitchell broke from the back dribbling through Road’s midfield he passed wide to Kennerley whose cross from the left wing found McGowan at the far post. McGowan pulled the back to the edge of the area to set up Jones who placed his shot through a packed penalty area out of Livesey’s reach.
1874 increased their lead in the 52nd minute when Jones intercepted a poor clearance; he slipped the ball to McGowan who unselfishly squared the ball to Parker who curled the ball into the net from 12 yards.
Greg Hall was forced to save with his feet at the foot of the post to deny Jack Coop before tipping a dangerous Zack Woodcock cross over the bar as 1874 kept their 5th clean sheet in a row.
In the 57th minute Kennerley met a Hind cross from the right at the far post bulleting a header past a helpless Livesey, who also powerless to prevent man of the match Kennerley from spectacularly curling the ball into the back of the net from outside the area to complete the scoring in the 69th minute.
In between the two goals Livesey cut out a dangerous low cross from Adam Whitlock and followed up with a brave save at the feet of Hind after he spilled the ball.
1874 twice went close to scoring from long range free kicks in the closing minutes. Whitlock saw his effort deflected wide by a defender while Kazim Waite-Jackson’s attempt was inches wide of the target.
