A tricky test awaited 1874 Northwich, with key players missing. The character of ‘74 would be challenged, and challenged it was. Manager Chris Herbert said, “You can’t turn up for games of football and play like that; we got a bit of our own medicine.”
The Greens started well, with Matty Fenton being denied an early opener—the save something to be proud of.
Despite the early chance, ‘74 were disrupted from their usual rhythm, with Studley stubbornly sticking to their gameplan.
For 1874 Northwich, their best route to goal looked to be through a set piece. This time, Jack McKean delivered a teaser; the Studley keeper was equal to it, tipping it over.
Six minutes from the interval, the breakthrough came the way of the visitors, rounding Shorthouse to finish well. There were appeals for offside; it didn’t come. For Studley, contentious? Care not—they led.
For ‘74, the second half was more of the same: lacking invention and inspiration, devoid of direction, descending into a disjointed outfit
Studley went in search of a second; in the 62nd minute, it nearly arrived, but for the post. Shorthouse was alert to pounce on the loose ball.
1874 Northwich’s best chance for an equaliser came in the 68th minute when Scott McGowan seized upon a defensive mix-up and surged forward to the byline, where Ndene was waiting. But Studley’s resolute defending once again prevailed.
In the 79th minute, Studley had a chance to wrap up the three points from the penalty spot. Shorthouse saved, and ‘74 had him to thank that the score was only one. From the resulting corner, though, Studley found the insurance goal that they craved to stun ‘74.
From an 1874 Northwich perspective, it was an uncharacteristic afternoon. The players will be hoping to right their wrongs against Shifnal.
