1874 PAY THE PENALTY IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE!

1874 NORTHWICH FC 0 V 1 WIDNES FC

Thursday 26th April 2018

Playing their THIRD game in FOUR days and against a side near the top of the Premier League table was always going to be a tall order for our very much “overworked” 1874 side but it has to be said that the lads put up a sterling effort and with a little bit more of lady luck they may well have collected all three points but in the end they succumbed to their fifth loss in their last six games

The number of games that have had to be played recently has been unbelievable and not surprisingly it has received much coverage locally and nationally. The recent run of games in many people’s eyes is an unbelievable one: after winning 3-0 at Padiham on the 17th April 1874 have played SIX more games in just NINE DAYS!

That said and to be fair, the management duo of Paul Bowyer and Wayne Goodison have simply just got on with the job in hand and for that credit must be given and also ALL the players can take credit for committing themselves to the cause.

The visitors on Thursday evening were obviously very much “up for it” at St Lukes Barton Stadium and came out of the traps very quickly to try and assert a strong hold on the game but 1874 were equally committed to trying to secure a second win in three days.

After 12 minutes 1874 had a really good chance to take the lead but unfortunately Kyle Riley when through on goal couldn’t apply the necessary finish and the chance was gone. Six minutes later and the visitors took the lead when they “won” a penalty in somewhat controversial fashion but Towey was unmoved and slotted the penalty home to give his side the upper hand and even more confidence.

The goal allowed Widnes to control the game and with their strong centre back partnership they were successful in negating much of 1874’s efforts to get back on terms.

Before the interval both sides had half chances to score but in truth both goalkeepers showed the form that has seen them as two of the best keepers in the League

After 65 minutes 1874 introduced Scott McGowan and Ben Woods into the fray in place of Danny Thomas and Sam Hind and at the same time the formation was changed and these changes nearly paid dividends especially as the visitors defence had more attackers to worry about than was the case previously.

Indeed 1874’s leading goalscorer – McGowan – had an excellent opportunity to level things when 1874 were awarded a penalty but the usually reliable striker saw his shot saved by Mottram low to his left.

1874 continued to press for an equaliser but it didn’t materialise and the game ended at 0-1 meaning that FIVE of the last SIX games (in NINE days) have resulted in a defeat for 184 by just one goal – fine margins indeed and somewhat heartbreaking for everyone at the club but particularly all the players who have never complained and simply “got on with the job in hand”

1874 Team: Hall; Connor; Russell (Sub Waite-Jackson 77); Pritchard; Thomas (Sub McGowan 65); Freakes; Hind (sub Woods 65); Woolley Matt (Capt.); Riley; Parker & Jackson (Ryan); Winthrop – Unused subs: Fallon & Winthrop
