1874 NORTHWICH 2-1 BARNTON EMIRATES FA CUP EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND
6TH AUGUST 2016

An 80th minute penalty converted by Tom Bailey clinched a 2-1 Emirates FA Cup extra preliminary round victory over neighbours Barnton at St Lukes Barton Stadium. One of five debutants in green, Bailey drilled his spot kick past former 1874 goalkeeper Matt Conkie to set up a preliminary round trip to reigning Hallmark Security League champions Colne.

Playing their first FA Cup tie since 1949, Barnton worked hard to frustrate 1874, who despite dominating possession were unable to settle into any kind of rhythm in a disjointed first half, while high temperatures on the opening day of the season also affected the intensity of the game.

In the opening minutes Bailey ran onto a through ball, but his shot from the edge of the area was easily saved by Conkie.

1874 took the lead in the 21st minute. Sam Hind swung in a cross from the right wing, as Conkie comfortably dealt with the cross referee Richard Abson blew for a free kick adjudjing Hind to have been fouled. Eddie Moran delivered the free kick into the Barnton area where Danny Thomas got his head to the ball looping it into the net.

Ten minutes later Matty Russell fired a shot across the Barnton goal before the visitors equalised a minute before half time. Peter Aidley calmly chipped the ball into 1874’s net from distance with Greg Hall stranded having given the ball away while attempting to clear.

Five minutes after the restart, on a rare excursion into the 1874 half Barnton’s Lee Vaughan scooped the ball over the bar. The rest of the second half was almost one way traffic, but 1874 struggled to find a way past Conkie.

He denied his former colleagues several times saving from Stuart Wellstead, Ryan Mitchell and Russell. Thomas had a header cleared off the line, Russell shot inches wide of the target while a Wellstead free kick cleared the bar by a similar margin.

1874 were forced to play the last 15 minutes with ten men after Neil Chappell was red carded after foolishly clipping Jon Shakeshaft round the ear, the Barnton man was one of five players booked during the game.

As thoughts started to turn to a Monday night replay at Townfield referee Abson spotted a hand ball by Ryan Greene as Barnton tried to clear a corner. Bailey stepped up to fire home despite Conkie getting his hand to the ball.
