ALL SQUARE AT THE ABBEY
ABBEY HEY 1 – 1 1874 NORTHWICH
Following on from last Saturdays one – one draw with Bootle, 1874 again had to settle for another one-one draw in a somewhat disappointing game at Abbey Hey.
1874 were without the services of leading goal scorer Tom Bailey and the management duo opted to play Jordan Bove in the central forward position supported by Scot McGowan and Joe Woolley.
The game started at a frantic pace with both sides struggling to put any real penetrating moves together but the crowd could be forgiven in thinking that they were in for a gold feast after two goals were scored in the first seven minutes. In truth both these goals had an element of luck about them as well as some indifferent defending.
The home side took the lead after just four minutes. 1874 had chances to clear the danger before Hardy was presented with a shooting opportunity which he grasped at and he fired a strong shot goalwards. Greg Hall made a good save but the ball came out again to the alert Hardy who scored with his second attempt.
This reverse seemed to fire 1874 up and Mark Jones and his men tried to gain the initiative to get back in the game and after the skipper was put through on the right flank he controlled well before pulling the ball back across the penalty area to his team mates but an Abbey Hey defender tried to intercept the pass but only succeeded in putting the ball into his own net for the equalising goal, with the chairman celebrating.

A few minutes later and Jones who had been injured when playing his port in the goal had to leave the field to be replaced by Matthew Woolley
Both sides were trying to put good football moves together but a combination of good defending and some lacklustre passing ensured that neither goalkeepers were over-tested
Early in the second half Scot McGowan came close to putting 1874 in front but as he stretched to reach a through ball his lob was just saved by the advancing Abbey Hey keeper.
Then it was Greg Hall’s turn to keep the score line the same as he had to save well from a well struck long range shot.
It did seem that the next goal would secure all three points for the side who got the goal but neither keeper was really tested and both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.
