SEASON ENDS WITH VICTORY
By Garry Clarke

1874 NORTHWICH 2-2 NELSON HSL PREMIER 29TH APRIL 2017

1874 Northwich completed their 2016/17 programme with a 2-1 win against Nelson at St Luke’s Barton Stadium in a typical end of season encounter, although the margin of victory could have been greater.

1874 got off to a flying start with Joe Woolley opening the scoring in the 6th minute. Cutting in from the right he shot low past Nelson keeper Luke Raybould from the edge of the area.

1874 doubled their advantage in the 30th minute when full back Jack Lever took everyone by surprise. Receiving the ball some distance from goal he unleashed a low shot which hit the foot of a post, the ball rolled along the goal line before nestling in the back of the net on the far side.

In between their two goals 1874 went close to scoring on several occasions, most notably when Taylor Kennerley headed just wide of the target and when Raybould did well to keep out another Woolley shot.

As the first half drew to a close, Woolley had a shot blocked by a defender, Sam Hind guided a Tom Bailey cross just wide of the target while Bailey had a shot blocked after good work by Tyler Edwards.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Raybould saving from Hind and Woolley headers in the opening minutes.

As the half progressed Adam Whitlock rattled the cross bar with a volley from an acute angle and from a corner Ryan Mitchell saw his header cleared off the line by a Nelson defender. Woolley shot over the bar from eight yards after bursting through the Nelson defence. Whitlock had a shot well saved by Raybould, while in stoppage time the Nelson custodian pulled off a remarkable one handed reaction save to keep out a Scott McGowan shot which took a wicked deflection of a Nelson defender.

Billy Grogan had Nelson’s only real goal scoring opportunity in the first half firing wide of 1874’s goal in the 37th minute. In the second half Mitchell and Lee Jones cleared Nelson efforts off the line before the already relegated visitors got a reward for their afternoon’s efforts in the 80th minute. Cameron Lancaster met a corner from the right at the post propelling the ball through a packed six yard box into the back of the net.
