1874 NORTHWICH 2-1 MAINE ROAD FA CUP EXTRA PRELIM RD 17TH AUGUST 2014

A late goal from substitute Matty Beadle knocked his former club out of the FA Cup as 1874 Northwich won their first ever game in the world’s oldest cup competition. 1874 started the game brighter exerting pressure on the visitor’s goal, but with a strong wind at their backs Maine Road soon took control with Josh Harper twice narrowly missing the target with shots before they took the lead in the 19th minute. Connor Hughes sprung the 1874 offside trap racing onto a through ball and, while the green shirted defenders were appealing for offside, slotted the ball home.

Maine Road continued to dominate with 1874 goalkeeper Matt Conkie forced into making several saves to prevent them from increasing their advantage.

Two minutes before the half time break Dave Short drew a fine save from goalkeeper Ryan Livesey, who also saved well to deny Lee Duckworth in the opening minutes of the second half.

1874, who had a penalty appeal turned down on the 54th minute, started to come more into the game in the second half and levelled the score on the hour mark. Short fired a free kick through a packed penalty area past a helpless Livesey.

1874 were reduced to ten men in the 71st minute when the referee showed Craig Farnworth a red card after he adjudged him to be the last defender to bring down a Maine Road player.

Both sides had chances to win the game in the closing minutes, to the delight of the majority of the 363 strong Barton Stadium crowd it was 1874 who scored the winning goal and progressed into the next round where they will play Evostik First Division North Prescot Cables.

An 81st minute corner swung into the Maine Road six yard box saw the ball pin-balling around hitting several players until Beadle, a summer signing from Maine Road, stuck out a leg to divert the ball into the back of the net.
