1874 Northwich booked their place in the first round of the Cheshire Senior Cup, where they will face Evostik League Division One North side Cammell Laird , emphatically beating Northwich Flixton Villa 4-0 at Valley Road.
The home team went close to opening the scoring in the 10th minute, but Ryan Mitchell cleared a goal bound header from a corner off the line. 1874 responded moments later when Matty Ward flashed a shot across the Villa goal.
As an evenly contested first half drew to a close 1874 started to gain the upper hand. Running onto a through ball, Mike Brandon laid the ball back to Ryan Stewart whose shot was well saved by Villa keeper Jordan Andrews. From the ensuing corner Villa managed to scramble the ball to safety but not for long.
1874 broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute, when a mix up between Andrews and a Villa defender when trying to deal with a teasing Lee Duckworth cross into the box presented Brandon with the simple task of tapping the ball into an empty net from close range.
1874 doubled their advantage 4 minutes into the second half when Stewart curled a free kick from the edge of the area round the defensive wall and into the net giving Andrews no chance, following a foul on midfielder Steve Crane just outside the area.
Rick Bailey scored 1874’s third goal in the 54th minute when he slotted the ball home after a mazy run through the Villa defence and cross by Ward.
By this time it was almost one way traffic as 1874 dominated the game, with Villa only offering an occasional threat, Aboukar Sanogo firing over and Akubra Sheego hitting the bar.
Villa keeper Andrews saved well to twice deny Brandon and saved bravely at the feet of Ward as he tried to dribble round him, however he was unable to prevent substitute Stuart Wellstead from scoring within a minute of his arrival in the pitch. Racing on to a through ball in the 76th minute, Wellstead had time to pick his spot and smash the ball home.

In the closing minutes Ward nearly capped an impressive personal and team display with a spectacular goal, meeting a cross from the left and volleying on the turn, he saw his effort clear the bar by a matter on inches.
