RECORD BREAKING MCGOWAN SEALS WIN
BY GARRY CLARKE
CHARNOCK RICHARD 0-2 1874 NORTHWICH HSL PREMIER 17TH NOVEMBER 2018
Scott McGowan swooped onto a low cross played into the Charnock Richard penalty area, swivelling eight yards from goal he steered the ball under Charnock goalkeeper Adam Halton’s diving body to seal a deserved 2-0 win for 1874 Northwich.
His 86th minute strike took his tally for the club to 82 eclipsing Mike Brandon’s previous landmark figure of 79 as 1874 Northwich’s record goal scorer.
1874 had taken the lead in the 17th minute of an open game in which play continually switched from end to end. The home side’s Oliver Oxley went close to opening the scoring in the opening minutes but shot wide before Taylor Kennerley ended a strong run down the left by blasting a shot from a tight angle past Halton.
Although 1874 enjoyed a greater share of play in the first half, Charnock created the better chances. Halton did well to cut out a dangerous Kennerley cross in the 36th minute and Callum Gardner had a shot deflected wide five minutes later.
In the 20th minute a through ball split open the 1874 defence allowing Oxley to race away, his shot was well blocked by debutant keeper Dane Rigby.
In the closing five minutes of the first half Mark Adams shot wide of the target from close range and Carl Grimshaw volleyed over the bar from the edge of the area. On the stroke of half time, Grimshaw, The Division’s leading goal scorer, was found at the far post by a free kick floated into the 1874 area. Unmarked, from close range he headed across the face of goal and wide.
Captain Matt Woolley opened the second half with a shot which just cleared the Charnock cross bar from 30 yards out.
1874 were in control of the second half, except for a short period around the hour mark when Charnock upped their game but could not find a way through a strong 1874 rear guard lead by man of the match Mark Jones. Rigby was called into action when Joe Noblet slipped the ball into the path of Oxley, the 1874 custodian saved bravely at the feet of the Charnock player.
In the 70th minute a Jordan Tucker cross found McGowan in the Charnock penalty area, Halton did well to smoother his shot. A few minutes later McGowan fired a shot just wide of the target, but in the 86th minute the hardworking 1874 hit man got his reward netting his record breaking goal.
