NORTHWICH VICTORIA 2-2 1874 NORTHWICH FA CUP EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND
5TH AUGUST 2017

Leading 2-0 with twenty two minutes to go 1874 Northwich were coasting to victory at Townfield, but two late Northwich Victoria goals mean the two sides have to meet again on Tuesday at St Luke’s Barton Stadium to decide who hosts West Didsbury & Chorlton in the preliminary round.

Playing up the Barnton slope 1874 got off to a flying start taking the lead in the 4th minute. Taylor Kennerley’s run into the Vics penalty area was ended by Danny McDonald tugging at his shirt. Scott McGowan dispatched his spot kick out of the reach of the keeper and into the bottom corner of the net.

Kennerley continued to cause problems, six minutes later his cross found Adam Whitlock whose shot was well saved by Vics keeper Richie Mottram. From the resultant corner, as Vics struggled to clear their lines, the ball crashed against the woodwork. A further six minutes into the game another corner proved problematic for Vics, Mottram having to pull off a good save to deny Sam Hind.

The home side also created goal scoring opportunities. 1874 custodian Greg Hall did well to prevent Sam Marshall from leveling the scores in the 10th minute after he intercepted a weak header meant for Hall. The keeper also pulled off saves to deny Mike Berresford and Olly Walker.

1874 regained control of an open and entertaining game with Kazim Waite-Jackson and McGowan both drawing saves from Mottram, Hind pulled a shot across the face of goal and Jack Pritchard ended a surging run by shooting wide of the target.

As the first half drew to a close players from both sides indulged in a bout of pushing and shoving, which resulted in 1874’s Paul Connor being red carded, leaving 1874 to play out the second half with only ten men.

Vics went close to equalizing in the opening minutes of the first half, a cross into the box found Brian Matthews unmarked; Hall did well to block his shot from close range.

McGowan doubled 1874’s advantage on the hour mark, lifting the ball over Mottram’s head after Whitlock had flicked a long ball into his path.

1874 had the ball in the net for the third time in the 64th minute, but the “goal”. Mottram did well to save McGowan’s initial shot; the ball fell to Whitlock whose shot beat Mottram but struck an offside McGowan on the goal line before entering the net.

With nothing to lose, Vics started to push forward more and got their reward in the 68th minute. A Stuart McDonald cross found Matthews unmarked in the centre on the 1874 area, his powerful header gave Hall no chance.

Ten minutes later Mike McDonald played a long diagonal cross field ball into the path of substitute Jordan Cobley. In acres of space he controlled the ball before sending an angled drive into 1874’s net to level the scores.

In the closing minutes both sides had a chance to win the game. Matthews shot narrowly wide of 1874’ goal while Hind headed against Vics bar from a corner.
