MCGOWAN DOUBLE ENDS 2018 WITH A WIN FOR 74
BY GARRY CLARKE
PADIHAM 1-2 1874 NORTHWICH HSL PREMIER 29TH DECEMBER 2018
A half time substitution and a change of formation inspired a second half comeback as 1874 Northwich, trailing 0-1 at the break, scored twice to end 2018 with a 2-1 win at Padiham. 1874 dominated the opening exchanges but fell away in the later stages of the first half as too many passes did not find their targets. Twice in the first five minutes the home sides rearguard were forced into scramble mode to clear dangerous crosses, while in the 15th minutes Scott McGowan slipped the ball into the path of Jordan Tucker, who bearing down on goal took too long to get is shot away and found his route blocked. Five minutes later Lucas Weir sent a shot from outside the area just over the bar.
Padiham took the lead against the run of play in the 27th minute. A careless pass gave the ball to the home side on the half way line. Moving out wide a cross was delivered from the right wing into the path Liam O’Neill, Padiham’s leading scorer made no mistake shooting home from just inside the area. Ten minutes later Weir curled a free kick over Padiham’s defensive wall onto the roof of the net but the home side was now in control of the game. O’Neill was denied a second goal by a good save from James Coates who also pulled off a fine save to deny Kayde Coppin. Although far from at their best, 1874 were unlucky not to go into the break on level terms, in the closing minutes of the half Padiham were struggling to clear a free kick from their area. In the scramble Danny Thomas and Matt Woolley combined to play the ball to the far post where McGowan forced it across the face of goal and just wide.
The introduction of Jack Irlam at the break shored up the midfield establishing a base from which players around him could express themselves more as 1874 performed much better in the second half. 1874 were level eight minutes into the second half. Irlam played the ball out to Tucker whose cross from the right picked out McGowan who steered the ball into the net.Two minutes later Padiham goalkeeper Tony Aghayere pulled off an amazing one handed save to, at full stretch, palm a Sam Hare chip over the bar. However, the Padiham custodian was unable to prevent 1874 edging in front in the 63rd minute. McGowan reached a long ball from Mark Jones inches before Aghayere to flick the ball into the net. 1874 were now in control of the game with McGowan, Irlam and Woolley being off target with efforts while Aghayere produced a good double save to prevent McGowan completing his hat-trick.
Padiham, who in the second half never seriously threatened 1874’s goal, were reduced to tem men for the final ten minutes when Josh Dunne was shown a red card for serious foul play having brought down Weir.In the closing minutes Aghayere tipped a long range Irlam shot over the bar, and Callum Gardner had a short cleared off the line by a Padiham defender.
