1874 made to rue missed chances

The FA Vase is a competition 1874 know all too well after reaching the semi-finals in the 17/18 season, however lower ranked Prestwich Heys made huge scalp by beating the greens 1-0 in this year’s first qualifying round.

After beating fellow title contenders Runcorn Town on bank holiday Monday, 1874 named an unchanged XI looking to put the game out of sight early, which in truth, it could have been.

The first 25 minutes of the first half was dominated by 1874 as expected playing some neat football and came close to opening the scoring on several occasions. The first was from Lee Knight who’s thundering strike bounced back off the crossbar twice before being cleared to avert the danger. Scott McGowan had a flurry of chances to take the lead as he hit the post and saw an effort sail wide of Saunders goal.

After the half hour mark Heys were in front. A deflected ball found playmaker Will Shawcross who played in Justin Pickering who fired home past the outstretched Aghayere to give Prestwich the lead at the break.

The second half began to show the superb resilience of the Heys backline who threw their bodies on the line to make sure 1874 didn’t back in the game. The half started 1874 putting the Heys backline under pressure as Mike Koral nearly levelled but his shot deflected narrowly wide.

1874 came close again just a few moments later as Lee Knight’s shot skimmed the post and bounced out of play, but couldn’t break down the defiant Heys backline. 1874’s chances were running out as time progressed and the blues in their distinctive kit came closest in the second half through a towering header from Mark Jones but Saunders managed to clear his lines.

In the end it was too little too late for 1874 who in truth could have played all night and not found the net and that is a credit to the Heys defence who put their bodies on the line after taking the lead in the first half.
