STALEMATE IN SILSDEN

Northwich played out their first goalless draw since October 2016 as they shared the points with Silsden at the Cobbydale Construction Stadium.

Neither side managed to seize control of a typical end of season game between two teams residing in the middle of the Hallmark Security League Premier Division table.

Although no goals were scored, or really looked like being scored, both goalkeepers were called into action on several occasions throughout an open game in which play switched from end to end.

Silsden goalkeeper Callum Jakovlevs was first into action in the 5th minute when he pulled off a good save to beat away a Jack Pritchard shot after a free kick into the home side’s penalty area landed at the 1874 captain’s feet.

During a first half which also saw Scott McGowan and Jack Irlam send efforts wide of Jakovlevs’ goal, 1874 goalkeeper Tony Aghayere saved well to keep out long range efforts by Arley Barnes and Luke Rhodes.

The second half started with Silsden substitute Laurence Sorhaindo shooting narrowly wide of 1874’s goal and on the hour mark hit the cross bar with a header from a corner.

Following a corner three minutes later Mark Jones screwed a shot from the edge of the area inches wide of the target. In the 75th minute Irlam ran on to a ball played over the top of the Silsden backline but could only direct a weak shot into Jakovlevs’ hands, while in the closing minutes the Silsden keeper saved well to deny McGowan.
