1874 RETURN HOME EMPTY HANDED

1874 are still searching for their first win of the season after suffering their third league defeat of the season at Squires Gate on Saturday.

1874’s supporters may well have been anticipating a first win of the season after beating their opponents twice in last season’s campaign but in truth 1874 didn’t really look as though they would get anything from this encounter even though they started brightly enough and in a frantic ten minute opening to the game 1874 did create the real first chance of a goal but after Mark Jones had headed a well delivered free kick towards goal but when this rebounded out to Beadle the striker hit his shot over the bar.

The home side responded well and in the 18th minute a good effort went narrowly wide of the target. 1874 did have the ball in the net five minutes later but the scorer – Beadle was rightly adjudged offside

Squires Gate also came close to opening the scoring after a good passage of play ended with their free kick on the edge of the box being well saved at the expense of a corner.
HT 0-0

Just five minutes after the restart 1874 fell behind to a goal that should have easily been prevented and in truth this goal highlighted a somewhat recurring problem for 1874 so far this season. A defender under it a back pass to his goalkeeper who then kicked the ball out poorly and straight to Gate’s centre forward who didn’t hesitate finding the empty net from 20 yards

Perhaps 12 minutes later the chance of a comeback for 1874 almost disappeared when another goal was conceded that perhaps could and should have been prevented. In truth the 1874 defence created the goal for their opponents when a first time clearance rebounded off another defender into the path of a Gate forward who was subsequently fouled by Matt Green and the referee not only awarded a penalty but showed a red card to 1874’s keeper.

Skipper Matt Woolley donned the gloves for his side and although he got a hand to the spot kick he couldn’t prevent the strike from Dawson hitting the net for a two-nil lead which was increased to a 3-0 score line in the last minute as 1874 were searching a for a goal at the other end
