Stockport County 1 v 0 1874 Northwich FC
The first ever meeting between these two sides proved to be an exciting affair with the outcome only being settled minutes from the final whistle.
There was a healthy crowd at Edgeley Park including as usual a good number of 1874’s travelling fans and they were treated to an exciting competitive game that was played in good spirits.
The opening exchanges were keen as both sides tried to get control of the midfield and as early as the second minute the home side showed their intentions with skipper Cowan firing a good shot that went just wide of the target.
In the 28th minute Woolley and Gardner combined well but Gardner’s shot easily saved and just a few minutes later the whole tie changed as 1874’s debutant Stephen Mason was rightly shown a red card for a badly timed tackle.
1874 had to quickly reorganise and to their credit they worked well for the rest of the game with the strong support from the 1874 supporters and 1874 very nearly opened the scoring on two occasions minutes before the interval. Firstly a well delivered corner by the impressive hard working Sam Hare was headed narrowly wide of the goal and just before half time after a foul by Robinson just outside the area Kennerley’s free kick was saved.
After the interval the pattern of the game continued in the same way with 1874 defending well – lead by Meadowcroft and Woolley and ably assisted by colleagues whilst a Koral never waned as he worked alone up front desperately seeking an opportunity to win the tie for 1874.
However, and perhaps not surprisingly, a winning goal arrived just minutes from the end for the home side and it was a goal fitting to win any cup tie with Bell hitting an unstoppable drive from 25 yards out giving Rigby no chance.
