74 SEE POINTS GO WEST
BY GARRY CLARKE

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON 2-1 1874 NORTHWICH

For the second time in three days 1874 Northwich saw the points disappear as their opponents came from behind to claim a win from a game which 1874 had dominated.

1874 went on the attack from the kick off, Jack Pritchard headed over the bar from a corner and Jake Parker volleyed wide in the opening minutes. Kazim Waite Jackson’s 14th minute free kick beat the defensive wall but only found the hands of West goalkeeper Aaron Ashley.

Moments later Waite Jackson found Ryan Jackson in space on the edge of the penalty area, his first time shot bounced a few feet in front of Ashley who spectacularly threw himself to his right to claw the ball around the post and denied the same player moments later when he rushed from his line to narrow the angle.

In the next ten minutes, Sam Hind headed inches over the bar from a corner, Paul Connor scrapped the top of the cross bar with a shot after a surging run had taken him into the West area and Jackson struck a free kick just wide of the target.

On the stroke of half time, with West struggling to clear a corner the ball fell to Waite –Jackson whose well struck shot was turned away by a full length diving save by Ashley.

After a goalless first half it took 1874 just three minutes of the second half to break the deadlock. Scott McGowan struck his 36th goal of the season turning a low Waite-Jackson cross past Ashley.

Playing their 4th game of the week 1874 continued to hold the upper hand but showed signs of tiring as the game became scrappy.

The home side whose only attempts on goal in the first half were two off target long range shots leveled the score in the 68th minute. Ben Steer cut through the 1874 defence to set up Tom Bailey and the former 1874 hit man made no mistake driving an angled shot into the net. The turnaround was completed in the 80th minute when Ash Woods burst into the 1874 penalty area and shot home from a similar spot to Bailey.

1874 continued to push forward in search of an equaliser, but had to be careful not to be caught out by a counter attack as they committed more men forward leaving gaps at the back.

Substitute Kyle Riley knocked the ball out wide to Jackson, the 1874 winger’s curling shot drifted inches wide of the far angle of the West goal.

Good build up play ended with Connor delivering a dangerous low cross into the West six yard box which was cut out by Larne Olapade as Riley was about to pounce. West cleared the resulting corner, quickly breaking up field, West’s attack ended with Steer string an upright.

As the game entered stoppage time a long clearance from 1874 goalkeeper Greg Hall found Connor who whipped in another dangerous low cross from the right wing. Riley, in the act of shooting was once again denied by a perfectly timed Olapade tackle as West Didsbury & Chorlton held on to claim their first victory over 1874 Northwich at the 11th attempt.
