Fantastic Fenton Stays for the New Season

1874 Northwich are thrilled to announce the retention of highly sought after central defender, Matty Fenton.

Matty, 23, first joined the club through our U21s setup in the 2021/22 season. He was promoted to the senior team later that season and made his debut on Tuesday 8^th February 2022 away to Glossop North End. Despite the 1-0 debut loss, it was clear to the fans that he had something about him. By the end of the March, he was starting every game.

Not only did he show his defensive and leadership qualities during the 2021/22 campaign, but he also became a regular goal scorer. Matty scored his first goal in our 1-0 away win at Newcastle Town. He powerfully headed in Sam Hare’s corner in the 76^th minute.

Matty extended his 2021/22 goal tally with a brace of headers in our 7-0 home win against Market Drayton Town.

In September 2022, 6 months after his maiden goal, Matty returned to Newcastle Town to lead the team out as captain for the first time: 11 days before his 22^nd birthday.

Matty continued his great form in the 2022/23 campaign netting 5 goals in 41 appearances and kept numerous clean sheets. Including two against league winners Macclesfield.

The 2023/24 season was not as successful. Although, Matty did score in our 2-0 home win against Vauxhall Motors on the 7^{th of} October. Following the departure of co-managers Paul Bowyer and Wayne Goodison, Matty took over as captain, in order to help player-managers Mark Jones and Matt Woolley.

The bad luck would only continue, as in our Boxing Day home Derby, He landed badly on his knee and was substituted. The injury would keep him out for almost two months before returning to the team as we hosted City of Liverpool in February. He saw out the rest of our relegation season as captain and a true leader.

Matty has also scored 9 goals in 86 appearances so far. He has scooped up some individual awards: winning the 2022/23 Young Player of the Season, the 2023/24 Supporters’ Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season.
