FIRST POINT OF THE SEASON ON THE BOARD
BY GARRY CLARKE

1874 NORTHWICH 1-1 ABBEY HEY    HSL PREMIER              18THAUGUST 2018

Drawing 1-1 draw at home with Abbey Hey, 1874 Northwich came from behind to secure their first league point of the 2018/19 season.

1874 dominated the game, with the visitors only enjoying rare moments of attacking play.

Mark Jones and Kyle Riley were just off target with efforts in the opening ten minutes before Sam Freakes, playing against his previous club, fired in a free kick from 20 yards which Abbey goalkeeper Ross Heywood did well to tip over the bar.

Against the run of play Abbey Hey took the lead in the 22nd minute. 1874 goalkeeper Matt Green pushed a long range Robert Swallow shot around the post for a corner. Stephen Solademi rose highest to meet the corner kick with a powerful header which was blocked on the goal line. Keiron Dale reacted quickest to force the ball into the net from close range.

1874 created several opportunities to equalise before the half time interval. Riley guided a header from a Lee Jackson inches past the post while a he also saw a defender block a shot on the goal line.  Floating in a cross from the left wing Joe Woolley, playing his first league game since April 2017, found Matt Russell at the far post, Russell’s shot on the volley flew over the bar.

Swallow opened the second half with a long range shot which Green turned away for a corner; the remainder of the game was almost one way traffic as 1874 launched wave after wave of attack.

1874 drew level in the 53rd minute when Scott McGowan sent Heywood the wrong way from the penalty spot after a Abbey Hey defender had been adjudged to have handled the ball on the goal line.  Having initially rejected 1874’s appeals for a penalty, referee Daniel Bruce after consulting with his assistant pointed to the spot.

A few minutes later Callum Gardner shot wide before McGowan clipped the outside of the post after being set up by Danny Thomas,  while after good play by Woolley, Jones had a goal bound shot blocked.

In the final ten minutes Kazim Waite-Jackson had a shot blocked, Thomas headed just wide and Heywood saved well at point blank range to deny Jake Parker.  In the closing minutes 1874 had a handball appeal turned down as Abbey defenders desperately blocked shots on goal.
