1874’s WINNING RUN HALTED BY (H)ALTRINCHAM!

CHESHIRE SENIOR CUP 1ST ROUND TUESDAY 9TH JANUARY 2018

1874 0 V 2 ALTRINCHAM

Well it had to happen at some time and in all honesty 1874’s loss to a strong looking Altrincham outfit was no real surprise. Understandably, 1874’s management duo used the game’s opportunity to rest some players and at the same time give “playing time” to some others such as Danny Thomas and Ryan Jackson both of whom had been out all season with injuries.

Leading goalscorer Scot McGowan and midfielder Mark Jones were two of the five players on the strong -looking bench.

The opening exchanges were fairly equal as both sides tried to test the opposition out and as such chances were fairly limited although both keepers had to stay alert and particularly Greg Hall in the 74 goal and to his credit he dealt admirably with all that the visitors tested him with in the first half.

However, midway through the half a controversial decision certainly had an effect on the game as 1874’s striker Kyle Riley was shown a red card for a tackle on the half way line – a decision that did not sit well with the home supporters.

HT: 0-0

After the interval Altrincham demonstrated their ability to keep possession and at the same time spread the ball about all over the field as they searched for the opening goal and this arrived in the 53rd minute when John Johnston who had worked hard all evening latched on to a final pass to slot the ball home from close range.

Going behind meat that it was always going to be difficult for 1874 to get back into the game and this was so even with the introduction of McGowan and the Altrincham backline remained resolute for the remainder of the game.

For all the supporters the game needed a second goal – ideally for 1874 – but when the second goal did arrive it was for the visitors as Tom Peers, who had been on loan at 1874 from Chester a few years back, picked up the ball 35 yards out and scampered goal wards before slotting the ball past Hall. This goal wasn’t without a fair bit of controversy though as an Altrincham player had clearly fouled 1874’s skipper Matt Woolley before passing the ball to Peers but, alas the referee thought otherwise
