UNBEATEN RUN FOR 1874 CONTINUES

1874 NORTHWICH FC 2 V 0  BARNOLDSWICK TOWN FC

Tuesday 9th April 2019

1874’s impressive form of late continued with a convincing win against a strong Barnoldswick side at the St Lukes Barton Stadium

With games coming up thick and fast at this time of the season 1874’s management team understandably took the opportunity of both “resting” a few key players whilst at the same time introducing some younger players to gain experience and, all in all, everybody should have left the game in a good mood as there were so many positives taken out of the evening’s entertainment.

The unbeaten run was increased to six games thanks to two second half goals scored by two of 1874’s captains – Sam Hind who started the game and Matt Woolley – a substitute on the night.

As early as the 5th minute 1874 had a chance to open the scoring but after a fine forward run Kyle Phipps’ effort was cleared by the visitors defence and shortly afterwards another young 1874 player – Harry Johnston – had a chance but his header was off target. Johnston was making his debut and he continued to put in a very impressive performance.

Although Barnoldswick had a chance on the quarter hour mark they didn’t really trouble the 1874 defence but at the same time 1874’s own attacks tended to fall short with the final pass not being as productive as they might have been.

HT 0 – 0

At the start of the second half Barnoldswick pushed forward and created a couple of half chances but 187’s keeper  Tony Aghayere and his defenders looked comfortable with their defensive duties.

1874 almost opened the scoring on the hour mark when Mark Jones headed just wide of the post when he would normally have “buried” the opportunity.

There were two more narrow misses when Jake Parker on both occasions had the  chance to score via his long ranged shots but was thwarted on each occasion

Eventually the opening goal arrived and it was no surprise that it was for 1874. Phipps did some excellent work in midfield before slipping a lovely well-waited pass into the path of Sam Hind who easily slotted the ball into the net for his first goal of the season.

This goal took the pressure off 1874 and six minutes later the game was effectively “in the bag” when Matt Woolley headed the ball into the net from six yards out.

All in all this was another inspired performance by 1874 and particularly as the starting eleven included four players who had only had seven previous starts in the side and Harry Johnston was making his debut and what a debut it was as he was also the Man of the Match following his all-round impressive performance
