74 TAKE THE “FERRI” INTO THE NEXT ROUND
BY GARRY CLARKE

1874 NORTHWICH 1-0 NORTH FERRIBY UNITED FA CUP 2ND QUAL RD 17TH SEPT 2017

A goal midway through the second half was enough to send 1874 Northwich through to the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Cup for the first time in their short history.

Moments after arriving on the pitch, North Ferriby United substitute Kyle Dixon turned a miss hit Taylor Kennerley free kick into his own net, this after having first given away the free kick by fouling man of the match Sam Hind.

The visitors had the first chance of the game with Leigh Hutchinson heading wide from a 3rd minute corner before 1874 assumed control.

Such was 1874’s dominance it was difficult to tell which the Hallmark Security League team was and which played their football three rungs higher up the non-league ladder.

Paul Connor’s long range shot looped off a defender into the Ferriby keeper’s hands, Scott McGowan fired a shot into the side netting and Jake Parker hit a shot on the turn over the bar,

In the 30th minute McGowan was denied by a magnificent save from Ferriby keeper Ross Durrant. Receiving the ball with his back to goal, McGowan held off a defender’s challenge to turn and fire a shot towards the top corner. With the crowd ready to celebrate Durrant flew across the goal to tip the ball to safety with a breathtaking flying save.

A couple of minutes later 1874’s keeper Greg Hall, who previously had been called upon to catch a couple of crosses and corners, made a much simpler save to keep out a Simon Russell effort from the edge of the area.

Two minutes into the second half Clevon Beadle failed to capitalize on a Lee Jackson cross from close range, before Durrant pulled off another flying save in the 55th minute. He plucked the ball out of the air as Jack Pritchard’s header arrowed towards the top corner.

The decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute when Durrant was wrong footed by Dixon.

Danny Meadowcroft wheels away in celebration following pressure from 1874 that saw North Ferriby put the ball into their own net.

Bottom of National League North, North Ferriby pushed their two centre backs forward in search of an equaliser which never came as they were repelled by a resolute 1874 defence superbly marshaled by captain Matt Woolley.

Ferriby did create several half chances without seriously looking like scoring. Jake Picton fired over 1874’s bar and pulled another shot across the face of goal, Jordan Cooke also shot wide while Jake Skelton drew a five save from Hall.
