1874 NORTHWICH 1-1 NORTHWICH VICTORIA

1874 Northwich were denied their first victory of the season conceding a 74th minute equalizer as they played out an entertaining draw at St Luke’s Barton Stadium against Northwich Victoria.

In the opening minute 1874 goalkeeper Matt Green saved well to keep out a shot from Joel Brownhill, however his opposite number did not fare as well in the 5th minute.

Taking far too long to clear the ball, Daniel Tabener allowed Scott McGowan to block his clearance, reacting quickest as the ball rebounded past the keeper 1874’s live wire striker tapped it into the empty net.

A minute later Joe Woolley slipped a pass into McGowan’s path, holding off a defender’s challenge McGowan entered the penalty area but Tabener managed to smuggle the ball behind for a corner.

McGowan’s afternoon ended five minutes later as he limped off the pitch to be replaced by Matt Beadle.

Vics began to assert some pressure on 1874’s rearguard which held firm only being troubled by Stuart McDonald who headed wide of the target while Rob Doran blazed a free kick over the bar.

Having survived Vics short period of pressure, 1874 ended the first half in the ascendancy.  Joe Woolley had a shot blocked after being set up by good work from Kazim Waite-Jackson, Callum Gardner had a shot well saved by Tabener, while 1874 had a strong penalty appeal turned down when a Beadle shot struck a defender’s arm.

In the opening minutes of the second half Green saved well to deny Brandan Barski as the Vics man found space from a free kick at the far post.

The visitors enjoyed the greater share of the play in the second half without causing too many problems for 1874 until the 75th minute when 1874 switched off for a second allowing Vics to take a quick free kick which resulted in Billy Whittle forcing the ball into the net.

As a feisty game entered its final ten minutes Vics John Connelly fired a shot from distance over 1874’s bar.

In the 87th minute Waite-Jackson carried the ball from deep in his own half into Vics territory, he passed out wide to Gardner who swung in a cross from the right which found Beadle at the far post. The 1874 substitute could not direct the ball goal wards so knocked it down into the six yard box where Tabener saved bravely at the feet of Mark Jones.
