SCOTTY UNLOCKS THE GATE TO SECURE THE POINTS

1874 NORTHWICH FC 3 V 1 SQUIRES GATE FC
HALLMARK SECURITY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION TUES 6TH MARCH 2018

1874 secured their second win in 48 hours with a comprehensive performance against Squires Gate a team that has enjoyed two good wins themselves in their previous outings.

Understandably 74’s management duo had rang the changes in the side as they need to keep everybody in the squad fit and ready “to do their bit” over the last couple of months of their very busy season and it was particularly pleasing to see Danny Thomas back in the starting line up in the back four.

The opening exchanges in the first twenty minutes were very much a “feeling out period” by both sides and as a result both goalkeepers were really only called upon to deal with a few crosses and both were not troubled

The first real chance of the game came in the 27th Minute and in fact the move was started by Greg Hall who gave the ball to Lee Jackson on the left flank and Jackson then served up an exquisite long pass into the path of McGowan on the right hand side but the strikers effort on goal was deflected for a corner from which Thomas almost opened the scoring from three yards out but missed the target.

Two minutes later Ryan Jackson combined well with Sam Hind and again the first goal of the game looked likely but the final pass was intercepted by a Gate defender and the chance was gone.

1874 remained patient however and this patience was rewarded just before half time when Scott McGowan finished off a good move.

Half time 1-0

The second half started somewhat similar to the first as both defences had to be aware of the respective goal threats but after 54 minutes 1874 increased their lead with a good goal well fashioned by the impressive Ryan Jackson who beat two defenders on the left before pulling the ball back to the “alert as ever” McGowan who netted his second goal from close range.
This setback didn’t however upset the visitors too much especially as they soon reduced the deficit to get back in the game on the hour mark. In truth the goal could and perhaps should have been avoided but that said it served as a “wake up call” to 1874 and under the leadership of Matt Woolley and his fellow hard working midfield colleagues – Sam Hind and Sam Freakes – 1874 took a firm grip of proceedings and their side could have added to their goal tally a few times before a late third goal arrived.

McGowan almost earned his hat trick in the 70th minute when he controlled the ball well and hit a speculative lob from distance but the ball narrowly missed the target. This was followed by Ryan Jackson missing an opportunity when dragging his effort wide from 5 yards but then the same player created another opportunity for McGowan but his effort was dragged narrowly wide.

Then the impressive Freakes combined well again with McGowan to create a chance for Hind but his effort was well saved by the keeper.

Finally, after 84 minutes the third goal did arrive and it was perhaps fitting that it was scored by Ryan Jackson who seemed back to his best and he certainly deserved his goal after his all-round performance

This win took 1874 into 7th position in the League table and on Saturday in their scheduled home game against AFC Darwen they will have completed half of their total league games for the season …. so very much some busy times ahead for 1874
