1874 NORTHWICH 4-2 NELSON NWCFL PREMIER 14TH NOVEMBER 2015
Born on the 15th November 2012, 1874 Northwich FC celebrated their 3rd birthday a day early by recording a first ever home win over Nelson.
As rain lashed across a sodden Barton Stadium pitch both sides cancelled each other out in the opening minutes before 1874 started to dominate. Nelson goalkeeper Callum Jakovlevs plucked a dangerous cross off the head of Matt Beadle, before in the 15th minute Beadle, under the challenge of a defender, shot inches wide. A few minutes later Stuart Wellstead rounded Jakovlevs only to shoot into the side netting from an acute angle.
1874 opened the scoring in the 20th minute when a corner from the left flew beyond the far post; Beadle recovered the ball, turned and crossed it into the six yard box for Mike Brandon to head home.
Ryan Mitchell twice went close to doubling 1874’s advantage in the closing minutes of the first half shooting narrowly wide after good play by Matty Ward and Paul Connor, before seeing a back header caught under the bar by Jakovlevs.
As did their hosts, Nelson worked hard throughout the game but found their efforts to get back into the game thwarted by a commanding 1874 defensive performance superbly marshaled by captain and man of the match Matt Woolley.
Brandon netted his second goal of the afternoon three minutes into the second half. Breaking from midfield he ran onto a through ball to slot it past Jakovlevs from 12 yards.
Three minutes later Nelson gained a foothold in the game. Mamoke Mkauna swooped onto a loose ball just inside the 1874 half and squirted a long rang shot around the advancing Matt Conkie to halve 1874’s advantage.
Minutes later Mkauna had a shot blocked and Adam Nuttall hit the rebound inches wide of the target as Nelson enjoyed their best spell of the game. The visitors drew level on the hour mark when Mitchell inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. As Nelson broke down field Mkauna played a cross field ball which Mitchell intercepted and diverted back towards Conkie, unfortunately the Northwich custodian slipped on the wet pitch and could only watch in horror as the ball rolled past him and into his net.
Against opponents who had won and drawn on their two previous visits to the Barton Stadium 1874 restored their lead in the 67th minute when Beadle sent Jakovlevs the wrong way from the penalty spot. As a free kick was floated towards the Nelson area, Beadle was pushed in the back prompting referee Andrew Cawtherley to award a free kick on the edge of the area until his assistant flagged to indicate the foul had taken place inside the area and a penalty was awarded.
In the final minutes of an entertaining game, Nelson committed men forward in search of an equalizer but in doing so left gaps at the back for 1874 to exploit on the break. Ward picked up a loose ball deep in his own half before running three quarters of the length of a heavy pitch before unleashing a left footed drive which only just cleared the bar. Moments later deep in stoppage time with Nelson on the attack, 1874 cleared the ball to Beadle who fed Wellstead, racing unchallenged from the half way line Wellstead calmly slotted the ball under Jakovlevs to seal a deserved victory in difficult conditions.
