Recap
Colne end 1874’s FA Cup adventure
1874 NORTHWICH FC 1 V 3 COLNE FC
At the same stage as last season 1874 find themselves out of the FA Cup.
This time it was at the hands of old league rivals Colne, with former 1874
favourite Matt Beadle scoring on his return to the Barton Stadium.
There was only 4 minutes on the clock, when Beadle, found space at the back
of the 1874 penalty area, his chip towards the back post finding its way
into the back of the net, despite valiant efforts to clear by two 1874
defenders.
1874, slow to get going were caught again, when a speculative long ball over
the top, caught out Greg Hall, and as Beadle raced on to the loose ball,
Hall went down to stop the forward, and was adjudged to have committed a foul so a penalty was awarded to the visitors.
Ben Wharton sent Hall the wrong way to increase their lead. Moments later, Hall was called in to action again, and this time he produced an acrobatic save to deny Garvin’s volley.
Just past the half hour mark and the score line worsened for 1874 as
Morrison made it 3-0 to the visitors
half time 0-3
1874 started the second half better, and just before the hour mark Scott
McGowan entered the fray replacing Shelton Payne, and he nearly made an instant impact as his smart cross narrowly evaded all Green shirts and was the ball was consequently cleared
Paul Connor showed great graft and determination on the wing to cross, his ball finding Stuart Wellstead at the edge of the penalty area but his effort was wild and fizzed wide of the goal
Ryan Mitchell was next to have an effort on goal, his header from an Eddie Moran corner bounced off the underside of the bar, down on to the line and was cleared to safety
As the game wore on with 1874 still pressing Colne, it soon appeared to be simply a consolation goal that 1874 would have to be satisfied and so it
proved when in the 89th minute Tom Bailey diverted a cross from Jack Woolley into the top corner of the goal.
So it was certainly an improved second half from 1874 but clearly too late
to change the eventual outcome of the tie.
