CHADDERTON 3-4 1874 NORTHWICH          MACRON CUP 1ST RD     20TH OCTOBER 2018

1874 Northwich scrapped through their Macron HSL Challenge Cup first round tie overcoming Chadderton by the odd goal in seven in a less than inspiring performance.

The home side, struggling in the lower reaches of the HSL First Division North, sensed a possible giant killing and opened the scoring in the 9th minute when a long range James Dwyer shot took a deflection which sent it looping over 1874 goalkeeper James Coates.

1874 drew level four minutes later when Sam Hare marked his return to the green and black with a well taken goal. Jordan Tucker intercepted a clearance from Chadderton goalkeeper Jordan Hadlow, playing a one-two with Taylor Kennerley, Tucker strode into the penalty area, his cross found Hare with time and space to pick his spot.

Jack Turnbull flashed a shot across the face of 1874’s goal while Scott McGowan flicked the ball over Chadderton’s bar before the Northwich hit man took his tally for the season into double figures with a  34th minute penalty. Chadderton defender Kyle McGovern clipped McGowan’s heel as he darted towards a Joe Woolley through ball, McGowan comfortably dispatched the spot kick sending Hadlow the wrong way.

Turnbull opened up 1874’s defence in the 40th minute with a cross from the right which Harry Pratt sliced wide on an open goal; however the scores were tied four minutes later.  Jordan Butterworth unleashed a shot from distance, swerving in the air it left Coates wrong footed.

On the stroke of half time McGowan broke through the Chadderton defence but his attempt to lift the ball over Hadlow was thwarted by a good save from the keeper. Hadlow also saved well in the opening minutes of the second half to deny Kazim Waite-Jackson who also screwed a shot inches wide of the target.

It was third time lucky for Waite-Jackson on the hour mark as he restored 1874’s lead drilling the ball home following a good run and cross from Woolley, who moments later left the field injured.

The lead did not last long as Chadderton equalised two minutes later. Breaking down field a cross from the right wing found Will Shawcross in space in the penalty area.  Steadying himself he fired the ball past Coates.

Mark Jones had the ball in Chadderton’s net in the 63rd minute but his effort was ruled out for offside. Substitute Matt Woolley fired a shot from the edge of the area wide of the target, while Waite-Jackson struck the foot of the post from a tight angle before the game’s decisive moment occurred in the 80th minute.

Chadderton defender Devon Matthews hauled Kennerley down in the area prompting referee Matt Scholes for the second time in the afternoon to point to the penalty spot. Captain Matt Woolley stepped forward to send Hadlow the wrong way and 1874 through to the second round.
