FIRST DEFEAT IN FIVE FOR 1874

CHARNOCK RICHARD 4 V 2 1874 NORTHWICH

HALLMARK SECURITY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

AWAY WEDNESDAY 12TH APRIL 2018

Once again 1874’s management had to “ring the changes” as the almost impossible fixture list continued with a Thursday night trip to face Charnock Richard and once again the 1874 faithful supporters turned out in force to cheer on their side but in the end 1874 succumbed to their first defeat in their last five games.

This game was certainly competitive but nevertheless it was a mystery to most of those supporters watching that the game had NINE yellow cards with 1874 having six of them and as well as that disappointment ,most of the “close decisions” went the way of the hosts.

That said, Charnock deserved their win against an 1874 side that once again and most understandably was slightly changed from the one that won convincingly in their last outing at Darwen.

However, in this game 1874 started well and after ten minutes they created an excellent passage of play involving Waite-Jackson and McGowan and the latter did well to find Kennerley on the left but the youngsters effort went wide of the target.

But the hosts took the lead in the 12rth minute when Noblett finished a move that was helped by an 1874 player losing the ball in the last third which allowed Charnock to swiftly move forward to create a good chance that was extremely well taken. It could have been worse for 1874 minutes later when another ball was too easily lost in the midfield but on this occasion 1874’s keeper – Hall – came to the rescue.

After this 1874 enjoyed their best period of play as they took the game to Charnock and might have scored several times before McGowan did equalise in the 39th minute from the penalty spot but 1874 were behind once again when in the 45th minute Grimshaw seized upon a mistake to score easily. H-T 2-1

After the interval 1874 clearly had to work harder to try and get a grip on the game but their task became much harder when the hosts were awarded a penalty after 56 minutes and Grimshaw scored his second of the night.

Unfortunately, at this stage Charnock had the “bit between their teeth” and their search for another goal provided dividends when Fitton increased their lead just before the hour mark.

1874 immediately changed their system and in doing so they did create some hope when wing back – Paul Connor – finding himself in a much further forward position scored well from just inside the box.

However, this proved to be the final goal of the evening and 1874 had to accept that on the night the best team won and so they now move on to their game 24 hours later against Winsford United
