1874 PAY THE PENALTY IN CUP EXIT
BY GARRY CLARKE

SILSDEN 1-0 1874 NORTHWICH (AFTER EXTRA TIME) MACRON CUP 3RD ROUND
26TH NOVEMBER 2016

1874 Northwich paid the penalty for not converting any of the numerous chances they created against Silsden as they exited the Macron Cup losing to an extra time goal.

1874 dominated the first half of the 3rd round tie against opponents who had knocked out Premier Division opposition in the previous round. Silsden goalkeeper Callum Jakovlevs was kept busy producing fine saves to deny Sam Hare, Sam Hind and Ryan Jackson, while many other attacks broke down as the final ball into the home area failed to find its target.

Silsden worked hard to keep their visitors at bay and while not looking like scoring themselves caused concerns in the 1874 rearguard. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first but the home side looked more dangerous. Struggling in the lower reaches of the First Division Silsden soaked up the pressure applied by 1874 and were content to hit their visitors on the break. Greg Hall had to be alert to save at the feet of Nicky McNlly after Silsden had passed their way through 1874’s midfield and defence. Hall also saved two long range Dan Riley shots.

Committed Silsden defenders threw their bodies in the way off goal bound efforts with Hind having a shot cleared off the line in the opening minutes of the second half and in the closing minutes of the game Danny Thomas saw a header from a corner also cleared off the line.

Mark Jones headed inches over the bar from a corner, Scott McGowan scooped the ball over the bar following a god run by Joe Woolley and Tyler Edwards was agonizingly inches from reaching a Woolley cross as he slid in at the far post with the goal at his mercy.

Ten minutes from time 1874 were reduced to ten men when Paul Connor was dismissed for aiming a petulant retaliatory kick at an opponent after he thought he had been fouled.

Silsden’s Leon Smith started extra time by running half the length of the Keighley Road pitch before shooting over the bar, Jack Woolley had a shot beaten away by Jakovlevs before Silsden took the lead in controversial circumstances on the stroke of half time of extra time.

Despite looking suspiciously offside Josh Eastwood was allowed to race onto a through ball, his run was abruptly halted on the edge of the penalty area by Thomas. Referee Connor Brown adjudged contact was made inside the area, despite 1874 claims it was outside, and pointed to the penalty spot and red carded Thomas, who in his opinion did not make an attempt to win the ball. McNally struck the spot kick against the post and followed up to score from close range.

In the second half of extra time the nine men of 1874 went all out in search of an equaliser but it was not meant to be.
Jack Woolley had a shot deflected wide of the target as the keeper was going the wrong way, Matt Russell ended an excellent run through the Silsden team from the half way by screwing his shot wide as he suffered an attack of cramp and McGowan lifted an awkwardly bouncing ball over the bar. In the final minute as 1874 launched one last attack, Jakovlevs saved a header from Tom Bailey and ten emerged from a goalmouth scramble firmly clutching the ball to his chest.
