1874 made the short journey to Wincham Park for this semi final tie and despite the excellent support from a strong contingent of supporters they couldn’t manage to quite reach the high standards of performance that have been seen for most of this season.
That said 1874 did create the first goal scoring opportunity in the third minute when skipper Matt Woolley found Harry Cain with an inch perfect pass from 35 yards out but Cain’s effort was easily saved. Then in the 10th minute it was the turn of 1874’s custodian – Aghayere to shine as he too produced an excellent save in denying Hooper.
This attack was in fact the start of a confident, continued attacking spell by Witton and it needed more good work from Aghayere and his defenders to keep the home side from scoring but as the half time break neared Witton did open the scoring with a goal from Isaac Baldwin.
Buoyed by taking the lead, Witton looked more confident and they increased their lead with a goal from Owen in the 49th minute. This set back obviously made the task even more difficult for 1874 but they stuck to their task valiantly.
Two of 1874’s younger players – Lucas Weir and Nathan Okome – both played well and on another day they might have had more to show for their performances but after Witton had scored their third goal by Hooper just over the hour mark 1874’s misery was complete when the usually reliable skipper Matt Woolley saw his penalty easily saved by the home keeper.
But despite this we are sure that Matt, very much like the rest of those at 1874, would have been so delighted to see his brother Joe Woolley back on the field for 1874.
