1874 Northwich are thrilled to announce the return of talented central midfielder, Lucas Weir.
Lucas, 24, is returning to the club on dual-registration from Leek Town, where he won the NPL Division One West title last season.
Lucas started his youth career at Chester, before moving to Wigan Athletic. Following the completion of his scholarship, Lucas joined our U21s and later broke into the first team.
In 2019, Lucas made the move across the Atlantic, representing the University of Evansville’s Purple Aces. In early 2020, Lucas made the move back to the UK and rejoined the club, as we pushed for the title in the curtailed 2019/20 campaign.
Following Covid, Lucas stayed with the club; helping us to win the 2020 NWCFL Cup, in July 2021.
After an impressive debut season in the NPL Division One West, Lucas joined the playoff-winners, Marine AFC, as they built a team to compete in the Premier Division.
In July 2023, Lucas returned to ’74, in our 5-0 pre-season victory over Rhyl and signed ahead of the league campaign. It was a bad season for the club, but Lucas finished as top scorer, including two freekicks, against City of Liverpool and Avro.
Later in the 2023/24 season, Lucas captained the team in our 1-0 loss to eventual play-off victors, Prescot Cables, before departing to join former co-manager, Wayne Goodison, at Leek Town.
Lucas commented on his return to the Greens:
“Obviously the squad is good, as the team is doing well in the league, so hopefully I can add another option to continue getting results.”
“It’s good to have the challenge of trying to get promoted out of the league, so having a good squad is going to be vital, if we want to make that happen.”
“I’m really looking forward to it, I haven’t played for a few weeks, so it will be good to get back on the pitch. Even though the squad has changed quite a lot, I still know a few of the boys, so will be good to play with them again.”
Lucas is available for selection in tomorrow’s weather-permitting trip to Atherstone Town.
Welcome back to ’74, Lucas!
