Worthy draw for U21’s in home league debut

The U21’s made their home league debut for this season at a sunny Moss Farm. The opponents were Litherland Remyca who had started off really well in their debut season by winning their first three games. Today’s game was going to be tough!

With both the first choice keeper and the back both unavailable we had to draft in an emergency signing on the day of the game Ellis Davies. Kick off was slightly delayed due to traffic problems for the visitors but this didn’t hamper 1874 as we scored within the first 15 minutes, Chad Lowe finishing off a great cross from Robbie Simpson from a move started by Nathan heap. Litherland then had a great chance to equalise chipping the keeper but the ball came off the bar. 1874 continued to push for the second goal but following a mix up at the back Litherland scrambled an equaliser. 1874 hit straight back with Robbie Simpson finishing with near post shot making it 2-1 with 25 minutes gone. 1874 had a great chance to extend their lead when a ball fell to Thomas in the area but he scuffed his shot wide. 1874 were made to pay for this with Litherland then scored in quick succession both from suspiciously looking offside positions but they went in at the break 3-2 up.

The second half started well for 1874 with a succession of corners which came to nothing but Litherland knew they were in a game. 1874 kept pressing and controlled the second half without getting the reward they deserved. Up stepped Chad Lowe! With a minute left of normal time he picked the ball up just past the centre circle and unleashed an unstoppable shot which the keeper had no chance in saving let alone seeing! The general consensus is that the goal of the season has already been won!

Delirious scenes followed and the ref blew the full time whistle soon after.

A draw was probably a fair result against a well organised and disciplined Litherland side. The result took Litherland to the top of the league with 1874 lying 8th 6 points behind the leaders but with two games in hand.

The team was

Ellis Davies, Callum Hoare, Nathan Heap, Brad Thomas, Matty Moore, Sam Slack , Dan Goodwin, Robbie Simpson, Zac Whelan, Dan Giddins and Chad Lowe. Subs Jamie Mountford, Dean Bellamy, Lee Briscall and Jacob Williamson.

Next up is another home fixture this Sunday with a 2pm ko at Moss farm against SGI Athletic a team based in Runcorn.
