Broadheath u21 3 – 2 1874 u21

1874 Northwich U21’s travelled over to Altrincham last Sunday afternoon to take on Broadheath Central a week after having hosted them in Northwich when the game finished 1-1.

With co 1st team manager Wayne Goodison in attendance it was a chance for the U21 lads to impress.

With Zac Whelan, Sam Ray and George Jones unavailable, Joran Henry and Dan Giddins who were both substitutes last weekend came in along with first teamer Jack Lever continuing his rehabilitation following his injury, making his debut in the U21’s .

On a 3g pitch 1874 started slowly and after 15 minutes fell behind following a poor back pass from the midfield which never reached the keeper and the Broadheath forward calmly rounded Millington and slotted home. There were a few more chances in the first half but 1874 went in to the break 1-0 down.

The lads must have had something in their half time drinks as within a minute of the re-start 1874 levelled following a lovely passing move which ended up with the keeper making a great save off Aidan Mcgloin and Chad Lowe pounced to tap in from close range.

10 minutes later 1874 deservedly took the lead with Aidan scoring direct from a free kick. However soon after Jack Lever received his second yellow card of the game meaning 1874 would play out the last half an hour with 10 men. Despite this we dominated possession but conceded unluckily when a speculative shot took a wicked deflection and looped over Tom Cooksey in net. 1874 still created chances but couldn’t find that elusive winner. We were made to pay as in injury time their keeper punted the ball up field, there was a mix up at the back allowing the ball to bounce in the box and with the keeper stranded, a Broadheath forward gleefully slotted the ball home into an empty net, 3-2.

Overall 1874 deserved a draw but were punished for not converting their chances and also by gifting the opposition with two goals from defensive errors.

The result leaves 1874 lying in 8th position with 8 points form 9 games. Our next three fixtures are away at Southport (who currently lie second) home to Stockport Town (4th) then away to Irlam (1st) so a tough few weeks ahead.
