U21’s hit SGI for six

1874 U21’s took on SGI Athletic in their latest Cheshire U21’s Championship West Division.

SGI Athletic are languishing at the bottom of the league winless and pointless so the management team were stressing to the players not to be too complacent!

They needn’t have worried as within 7 minutes of the start 1874 were awarded a penalty following a foul on Kennerley. Whelan stepped up to take put proceeded to give the keeper an easy save with a tame penalty. What was I saying about complacency!

On 13 minutes we were awarded another penalty following a push and this time Kennerley took over the duties and calmly slotted home the kick. 1-0.

20 minutes in Whelan had a great chance to make it two but scuffed his shot but made amends soon after to make it 2-0. Lowe had a real chance to make it three but put it wide before Kennerley got his second of the game with a great solo fun and finish. Just on half time Lowe finally got on the score sheet having missed a number of chances, half time 4-0.

At the start of the second half SGI produced their first shot of the game which came off the bar, a let off for 1874. A couple of substitutions were made to freshen things up and soon after this there was an altercation involving number 12 for SGI who was shown red for throwing the ball in the face of an 1874 player. This seemed to inspire SGI as they played much better with 10 men than 11. 10 minutes from the end Arrowsmith, making his debut then hit the post before slotting a shot away following good work from Briscall, making it 5-0. With five minutes to go Giddins scored from a lofted pass from Goodwin to make it 6-0.

A comfortable victory which lifts 1874 into 5th in the table 3 points off the leaders Litherland but with a game in hand.

Team: Davies (E), Hoare, Davies (J), Heap, Moore (M), Slack, Mountford, Whelan, Kennerley, Giddins, Lowe, Subs Goodwin, Briscall and Arrowsmith.

Next up is a cup game away this Sunday at Garswood United in the 2nd round of the Championship West Division Cup. Garswood currently lie 4th with 9 points from their four games so it should be an even cup tie.
