Captain Woolley looks forward to the Macron Cup final

Two years since he first lifted the trophy, skipper Matt Woolley aims to repeat history tomorrow as we face the difficult challenge of Runcorn Town in the 2019/20 Macron Cup final.

Aaron Smith’s dramatic late winner against City of Liverpool saw us over the line in a highly competitive game at the J Davidson Stadium back 2019, and Matt added he expects the same tomorrow.

“Our games against Runcorn are always competitive and that’s only going to be heightened in a cup final.

“It was a proud day for the club against City of Liverpool two years ago and if we get it right on Saturday then it can be once again.

“As a player it’s always the aim to win silverware and we’ve got an opportunity to do so once again.

“I hope we can have a big turnout and great support like we always do, with restrictions being lifted, it feels like a step in the right direction especially for football getting back to normal.

With four weeks until the start our of league campaign against Clitheroe, Matt believes that a win on Saturday would give everyone a “huge lift,” for the remainder of pre-season.

“It’s nice to have that competitive edge to a game at this stage of pre-season because it’ll make us think about how to break a team down more.

“I know that Runcorn will be up for it so we’re in for a good game and we’re in a good place at the moment, so I hope we come away with the silverware.

Tomorrow’s final will be Matt’s 293rd appearance for the club and he revealed that he believes that the final is “exactly what the club needs.”

“The final comes at a good time for us as it means we can have a competitive fixture before the league season starts so we can prepare in the proper environment.

“Throughout pre-season we’ve worked on how we set up and our shape so it’s a chance to put it into practice in a big game.

“We know the type of game we’re in for against Runcorn. We’ve played against them numerous times across the years and it’s important that we do what we do well and get the result over the line.”

Tomorrow’s Final kicks off at 3pm at the Viridor Community Stadium with prices at Runcorn £7.00 for adults, £4.00 for concessions & £3 for U16’s.
