Mark Taylor Takes on Groundskeeping Role at 1874 Northwich

1874 Northwich has welcomed a new addition to its team, as Mark Taylor steps into the role of groundskeeper at Townfield. A familiar face within the ‘74 family, Mark brings not only enthusiasm, but also strong commitment to both the club and its community.

Reflecting on his appointment, Taylor expressed his gratitude: “First of all, I would like to thank 1874 Northwich and Barnton for the opportunity to become the groundskeeper at Townfield.”  His motivation is driven by a desire to give back to the club he follows while supporting the area he calls home.

For Mark, this role is not just about maintaining the pitch—it’s an opportunity to take on a meaningful role to balance alongside his daily responsibilities. “As many are aware, I am a full-time caregiver for my disabled partner and son, a demanding and challenging role that significantly impacts my mental well-being,” he shared. “Therefore, dedicating a few hours each week provides a necessary break from caregiving responsibilities, offering a different type of challenge and the benefit of some fresh Mid-Cheshire air.”

Working alongside volunteers from both 1874 Northwich and Barnton, Mark enjoys the camaraderie that comes with improving the playing surface and facilities. “We always have a good laugh and joke, all working together to enhance the ground,” he added.

Now, Taylor hopes to encourage others to join in. Volunteering at Townfield isn’t just about keeping the pitch in the best condition for the players of both teams—it’s also about being part of a community, learning new skills, and enjoying the satisfaction of creating a space for his team to thrive.

“I anticipate gaining valuable new skills in this role,” Mark remarked, emphasising the sense of achievement that comes with taking care of the facilities. If you’re passionate about local football, enjoy working outdoors, or just want to contribute to a great team effort, consider getting involved. Whether you have a few hours to spare or simply want to learn something new, there’s always room for another pair of hands.

A huge thankyou to Mark and all of the amazing volunteers from both clubs, without whom we wouldn’t have a ground to watch our teams play. Let’s hope the recent bout of rain means we have some green on the pitch to match the green on the shirts.
