Matty Fenton signs contract

The popular defender signs up ahead of season 2022/23

Matty Fenton

1874 Northwich is delighted to share the news that defender Matty Fenton has signed a contract with the club.

Matty has made an immediate impact in the first-team since being given his debut back in February this year. The former Weaverham High School student had been a standout player for 1874 U21’s since last summer after being invited along to training by team mates.

From debut to regular, Matty has gone onto be a consistent performer and even scored the match winning goal away at Newcastle Town, which at the time seemed an important turning point in our maiden season at Step 4.

We caught up with Matty who has this to say: “Goody & Bow have always been transparent with me and told me at the beginning of pre-season about a contract. There was no doubt I was going to sign.”

Asked about aspirations, Matty said: “In the short term I need to keep progressing my performances week-in week-out. I’ve always wanted to be a professional footballer and believe hard work is the key factor in getting there. I’ll continue to give my absolute 100% to the club and can’t wait for this season”.

Matty – who hails from Whitegate – had been with Crewe Alexandra from U8’s to U18’s, missing out on a pro contract. His football pathway kicked off again with our U21’s.

“I will always have appreciation for Joe and Yan because I was not fit when I started.”

“First-team wise I think I adapted quite well and the team were all really welcoming of me. I think it took a couple games of getting used to as the tempo is much quicker than U21s but I feel I adapted quickly” added Matty.

A huge congratulations Matty, we hope to continue to see you flourish in 1874 colours.
