Many supporters will have perhaps seen that Matt Russell has left the club. Russy’s circumstances have changed in that he now has his family and thriving business to think of, which of course are his priority. Matty will eventually aim to play somewhere a little closer to home, to help with travelling issues.
Matty has been a wonderful servant to our club. He has made 167 appearances since he joined from Glossop North End in the summer of 2016, scoring one incredible goal that all supporters remember! He was a great penalty taker too. Matty has made a huge contribution in creating so many memorable and incredible times for 1874, he understood and bought into the ethos of the club and for that, the fantastic relationship he has always enjoyed with the supporters, will remain strong.
We reserve the term ‘legend’ for only a few people involved with 1874 however Russy will always be one to everyone at the club. A very popular player, who gave everything for the shirt and fans.
We send our huge thanks to Matt, for his amazing efforts and loyalty and for helping to create history and move the club forward. We send our best wishes to him and his lovely family for the future.
Thanks Matty!
