U21’s progress in Championship cup

1874 U21’s travelled to Cheadle last Sunday for their first game of the new season and like the 1st team it was in a cup competition. Although slightly less glamorous than the FA Cup, the Preliminary Round tie of the Championship Divisional Cup was still going to be a test even though we took four points off Cheadle last season in our league encounters. We were keen to progress having been knocked out this cup at the preliminary round last season.

In a side showing 7 debutants, with three of those in the starting eleven we took the game to Cheadle and deservedly went 1 up with great free kick from one of the debutants Jamie Mountford. Half time and it was 1 nil to 1874. Buoyed by their half time team talk Cheadle started off brightly in the second half and soon equalised and then went ahead 2-1. The lads didn’t panic and began tom play some lovely football and equalised through Danny de la Bastide before another debutant Joe Davies made it 3-2 with Robbie Simpson continuing where he left off last season scoring the 4th to seal the game. The win sets us up for a “Round16” tie away at Garswood United on 4th October but we are next in action on 4th September away at Styal in the first round of the League Cup. Our league fixtures start with an away fixture at Blacon Youth FC on the 11th September.
