1874 Northwich are thrilled to announce the signing of experienced winger, John McGrath.
John, 26, joins the club from Burscough, where he made 13 starts, scoring 6 times. John will be most known to supporters for his time with City of Liverpool, Widnes, Clitheroe and Prescot Cables.
John joined the Purps in 2017 from Liverpool Football College and across his first three spells, he made 101 appearances, scoring 33 goals. Whilst at the club, he also lifted the NWCFL Premier Division in 2019.
In March 2023, John made the move north to Clitheroe, where he scored 8 goals in 22 appearances, including the fourth and final goal in our defeat in the hills last season. He then finished the 2023/24 season at Prescot Cables, where he won the NPL West play-off final, before departing the club in the summer.
John spoke on joining the club:
“I’ve had some tough matches against 1874 over the years, so looking forward to being on the other side now. Hopefully, I can add to this already free scoring squad with some goals.”
“I’ve been involved in a couple play offs and promotions in last few years, so hopefully that holds me in good stead.”
“I’m looking forward to playing for the club. After playing against 1874 over the years, it has always been a loud place to go and always well backed on the road.”
“My aim is to settle in quickly and to help the lads get over the line, getting the club back where it belongs!”
Chris Herbert added:
“John is a player I have wanted since I took the job here at ’74. He has everything you look for in a winger, or even a 10. He is direct, with good link up play, he drives with the ball into the box and chips in with important goals.”
“He is what I call, ‘a big game player’. He is a winner and we have a lot of them with us right now.”
John comes straight into the squad as we host Dudley Town tomorrow afternoon.
Welcome to ’74, John!
