1874 boss Chris Herbert has hailed the ruthlessness of his side after they dispatched Romulus 6-0 at the weekend, but has warned tonight’s fixture against Hanley Town will be a much tougher test.
After a disappointing result against Bootle in the FA Cup, Herbert’s side responded magnificently and showed a relentless pursuit for goals that the ‘74 boss admitted had been lacking in the previous season.
“It’s a great start, and the lads stuck to the game plan and performed well. But we can’t get carried away, we have a very tough week ahead with Hanley on Tuesday night and then Winsford on Saturday. So, we have to be prepared, and levels need to be higher again.”
“It was big for Steve, myself and the rest of the coaching staff that we are more of an attacking threat. In Eden Bailey, Joel Jones and Matty Fenton we lost close to 50 goals from the team, so we had to replace them goals all over the pitch.
“Kyle has already shown his quality, and his free kick Saturday was different class and almost done it again straight after it when Hayzie got his 2nd by following in from the save.
“Jack Woolley has also shown he will get goals and we know John McGrath and Fitzy get goals as well.
“We want to score more from set plays, we always look dangerous but just not converting at the moment. It will all come together.”
The fixture this evening marks the first home fixture of the season, and the ‘74 boss has challenged the supporters to turn up in their numbers and make Townfield a difficult place for visiting teams to play at.
“Our fan base are the best in the league, without question. Get down in your numbers, as we always say, the fans can drag us over the line in these big games.
“Get the drum banging and the songs going, and let’s try and make our home ground a fortress.”
