U21’s beat ‘top of the League’

1874 Northwich 4 – 1 Daten

1874 Northwich U21’s took on the current unbeaten league leaders Daten FC on a sunny afternoon at Moss Farm in their latest U21 fixture in the championship division.

Josh made four changes from the team that tasted cup defeat last weekend. Jack Williams returned in goal with Luke Mullock dropping to the bench, the captain Zac Whelan returned having been absent last week, Callum McGhee stepped up from the bench with Joe Clare going the other way and Andy Moore made his debut. Sam Hill and Josh Snelgrove were both unavailable.

The game started pretty evenly with neither side creating many chances however 1874 took the lead when Elliott Watkins scored after 15 minutes. The goal seemed to give 1874 belief that maybe Daten were beatable and extended their lead after a clumsy challenge by a Daten defender on Taylor Kennerley resulted in a penalty which Elliot Watkins stepped up to convert calmly. Half time arrived at 2-0 to 1874.

Daten came out after half time a different team and deservedly scored ten minutes into the second half to peg 1874 back to 2-1. This goal seemed to spur 1874 on and increased their lead 5 minutes later when Taylor Kennerley finished off a nice move to make it 3-1. A scrappy period of play then ensued with Daten resorting to a number of niggly fouls. Unfortunately having picked up a soft yellow card in the first half Zac Whelan picked up a deserved second yellow for tugging back a Daten forward reducing 1874 to 10 men for the remaining 25 minutes. Heads could have dropped as Daten put the defence under a bit of pressure but it was pleasing to see the defence hold firm and with 15 minutes to go Taylor Kennerley sealed the win with his second of the game and 1874’s fourth to make it 4-1.

The win lifts 1874 to second in the table only 2 points behind Daten. Next up is a home game at Moss farm this Sunday 2pm kick off against West End Boys Club who we beat earlier in the season 5-3. As Daten are playing in the divisional cup the same day there is an opportunity for the U21’s to go top of the table!
