Wayne’s thoughts ahead of the Ossett United game

This weekend’s FA Cup tie is an opportunity for the club to begin a cup run – starting at the venue where our furthest venture into the world’s most famous cup competition came to an end 6 years ago.

1874 exited the competition at the first hurdle last season, and Co-manager Wayne is keen to put this right this year.

“It’s a few years now since we had a bit of a cup run and I can assure everyone it is not something that we don’t try really hard to do each season, but of course there is always an opponent looking to do the same.

“In terms of our team, which again is very young, it would be great for many of them to play through a few rounds if possible.

1874 have had another pre season of transition, bringing in no fewer than 14 new additions to the squad. Speaking about recruitment, Wayne mentioned the importance of keeping the services of Matty Fenton, as well as the re-signing of fan favourite Lucas Weir.

“We were both really keen to keep Matty with us, he is a level headed lad and understands that he is better suited to play another full season here and keep developing, plus he is another leader in the dressing room.

“Bringing Lucas back was another massive positive, and again I think makes sense for both of us. He understands what we do and he also knows that he will get the chance to develop further here.

This Saturday marks the 10th year the club has entered the FA Cup, and Wayne expects a difficult test against a side in equal standing to ourselves.

“Ossett are a well organised and typical side from our level who, like us, will be doing everything to try to progress.

“I have let the new players understand just what to expect on Saturday and how there will be a real feeling of positivity towards them.

“I hope they both embrace and express themselves as I know they can and that come the end of the game everyone can say they have committed everything to the cause.”

Away travel is now sold out to this fixture, with 1874 fans travelling in large numbers.
